Spanish mission churches were a series of religious outposts established on the sites of pueblos by Franciscan friars under charter from the monarchs of the Spanish Empire. Most were built in the 16th and 17th centuries throughout New Mexico with the goal of converting indigenous people to Christianity. Many are perched high atop mesas, surrounded by the homes of the pueblo people as seen here.
