Description
A raw Welo opal, exactly as it came from the earth, wrapped in copper that grew around it. Ethiopian opals from the Welo region are some of the most vivid in the world, each one a small fire of color, shifting from honey-gold to white to flashes of orange and green depending on the light. The copper electroforms directly around the raw stone, following its natural contours, holding it without cutting or polishing away what makes it extraordinary. No two are alike. Wear it when you want to carry something genuinely rare.
Opal is associated with creativity, emotional depth, and spontaneity. The birthstone of October. Wear it when you need to feel inspired and fully yourself.
Why Welo Opal
Ethiopian Welo opals are a variety of hydrophane opal, meaning they can absorb water and temporarily shift in appearance, a characteristic unique to this origin. Found in the Welo region of Ethiopia, they are prized for their vivid play-of-color, ranging from warm honey and amber base tones to flashes of orange, green, and blue. October’s birthstone, and one of the most visually complex gemstones on earth. Stone sizes average 5-7mm and vary in shape as each is raw and uncut. No mystical claims. Just a genuinely remarkable stone with a meaning that fits real life.

How This Handmade Opal Ring Is Made
Each ring is made to order in my small Santa Fe studio. I hand-select every opal for its color and character, then electroform copper directly around the raw stone. The copper grows through an electrical process over several days, forming the organic setting you see. No mass production, no shortcuts. Every piece from this studio is one of a kind.
A Note on Stone Variation
Raw Welo opals vary significantly in shape, size, base tone, and play-of-color. The ring you receive will be similar in character to those shown, chosen for its beauty and quality. Because these are raw and uncut, each stone has its own natural form.
A Note on Opal Care
Welo opals are hydrophane and can absorb water, which may temporarily affect their appearance. Remove before swimming, showering, or applying lotions or perfumes. Store dry and away from prolonged direct sunlight. Handle with care as raw opal is more delicate than polished stone.
Copper Finish Options
Bright Copper has a warm lustrous shine and will develop a natural patina over time. Polish with a soft jewelry cloth to restore brightness. Antique Copper is dipped in liver of sulfur and polished to a rich dark patina that brightens gradually with wear.
