Description
R DAVID MARKS
Born and raised in western Kentucky, David’s earliest artistic influences came from the work of luminaries such as Ansel Adams, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston, followed by Ralph Gibson, Pete Turner, and Sebastião Salgado. Twelve years in the U.S. Air Force provided him with unique photographic opportunities throughout the United States and Europe.
Drawing on extensive experience in military, aeronautical, and landscape photography, David quickly established himself as a versatile commercial photographer based in the Detroit area. Working throughout the Midwest, New York, Florida, and Arizona, his client roster included Pontiac, GMC, Cadillac, Ryder, and Absolut Vodka. More than 500 of his photographs have appeared in publications including Detroit Monthly, City Smart Magazine, Kansas City Star, New Mexico Magazine, and Stars and Stripes.
Recent Work
After leaving the industrial Midwest for Santa Fe, New Mexico, David has spent the past fifteen years living in an idyllic setting—nestled at 7,000 feet in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. There, his creativity has flourished as he captures both the soul of the land and the faces of its people through portrait and landscape photography set against the dramatic canvas of the rugged Southwest.
His recently completed project, Dad’s Bowling Shoes, is a deeply personal journey of healing. Traveling with his father’s forty-plus-year-old bowling shoes is more than a symbolic gesture—it represents an effort to mend the strained relationship he, like so many sons, has experienced with his father. David is currently working on several ongoing projects, including There and Back, Nice Indians Behind You, and Africa.
