Description
Wendeline Matson was born in 1976 in Texarkana, Texas and has a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Arkansas. While her brothers and cousins were out shooting or riding their bikes, the young artist spent her time creating. She was known for having the craziest imagination in the family. Matson creates naïve and deceptively simple work in a style that can be described as “Innocent Realism.” Her paintings use a layered construction to narrow focus while leaving visible memories like ghosts from previous layers. Matson’s bright colors and layers allow her objects to exist figuratively. Her subject matter builds monuments to childhood, recalling roadmaster bikes, snuggly animals, and flowers with all the wonder of a long-ago memory.
Matson is represented by galleries in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Boston, Massachussets; and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The artist’s work has been shown across the United States and has been published in Southwest Art Magazine. Wendeline Matson currently lives and works in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
