Description
Each of these pieces was transformed in a traditional wood-fired kiln, a process that harnesses the unpredictable beauty of fire, ash, and heat over many days. Unlike electric or gas kilns, which offer consistent and controlled results, wood firing embraces the chaos of combustion. As the fire rages, wood ash swirls through the kiln and melts onto the surfaces of the pots, creating natural glazes, flashing marks, and color variations that cannot be replicated.
Every piece bears the marks of its unique placement in the kiln, the type of wood used, the path of the flame, and the atmosphere created during the multi-day firing. We also used soda in this firing, introduced with a Super Soaker (yes, really), adding a dynamic vapor glaze effect to many of the surfaces.
Wood firing is not just a method—it’s a collaboration between artist and fire. No two pieces come out the same, and each carries the memory of its time in the kiln: the heat, the ash, the flame, and the unexpected magic of it all.
